Samsung Galaxy S GPS Solutions (Part 2)

This time the Samsung Galaxy S will run some gps navigation software using solely the build-in gps receiver. Eventhough the internal gps chipset is not as efficient as the sirfstar III (showed in action on my first video) it seems to be capable enough. But some preparation (or assist) is needed in order to accelerate a stable satellite-fix during a cold start. The "assinting" i use is not the "typical" a-gps such as getting information from cellular phone towers (for the trilateration process); I just ïnject recent "data" (downloaded ephemeris) using the right applications, available at the Android market. I removed some parts of this video ( long waiting at stop lights, or too much background noise) and in this way reducing video size and upload time... |I suggest you guys post all your questions here: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775450&highlight=gps&page=15 (copy this link and paste) It is a forum and more suitable for this kind of discussions I'll be glad to answer all your qustions over there

Can i use a bluetooth gps receiver for the galaxy s?
December 29th, 2011 - 13:09
@cobrastomas
Watch both films
I am not online in both of them; that’s because I use only ONBOARD gps programsn like iGo, navigon, sygic etc
By the way, these videos are quite “old”
Now I am running android 2.3 (ginferbread) and the gps performance is even better
Go to XDA-developers forum and look for my posts (betoNL), if you want to know more

@sunblazeman Don’t get one. Nexus S will be much better. Working GPS, no lag issues. Less samsung dumb fuckery means you get updates quickly too.

@cobrastomas Mine doesn’t work very well at all without wifi. I’ll be driving with no signal, pass a house and suddenly it knows where I am. Anyway, shit phone is shit. Time to sell this horrible piece of crap and get something that works well!

galaxy s needs internet to use gps?
December 29th, 2011 - 14:47
I love the Galaxy, though I don’t have one yet. But I will soon.
So I am gathering information about its features now in advance.
For GPS I am using a Garmin Streetpilot. Of course I don’t compare a mobile phone GPS with a special car Sirfstar 3!
I would use the Galaxy GPS for times when my car is not around. Last year I got lost on a bike tour and wished my phone had just rudimentary GPS features to point out the shortest way home. The Galaxy has much more than that.
Great device!!!

@sunblazeman
So let me see . All the fuss because the GPS pointer is dancing for 2 seconds ? How accurate you want domestic gps to be? Accuracy may oscilate between 5 to 10 meters in busy areas. When cursor jumped to that small street(at 6:13 ) I was already passing it by..
Which gps software and devices are you experienced with?
By the way, since the new Froyo (2.2.1) The GPS on my galaxy s got even better.
An optimized kernel also helps
Gonna make a new video…. Probably next week

@beto9000i: I would not call this stubborn. It is only mentioning a fact. The GPS pointer jumps to the right without the background changing.
At 5:59 there is a video cut where grass changes to side walk, which you mentioned. The clock jumps too.
At 6:13 you can see that the background remains. There is a sidewalk with white lines. I watched the video image by image. At first the GPS pointer jumps to the right, then the orange route is updated too.
Thanks for the video anyway. It is helpful.

I can’t even hook my phone up to my PC let alone get the GPS to function properly
keep getting an MTP Initialization error

Recently I went to Rotterdam to see my mother. Thought I’d test the Samsung Galaxy S GPS with the above settings, AND with gpsFix (app) and Trackerbooster (app). While it did enhance fixes on sattelites slightly, it did not do the right job when it was raining. I heard that finding fixes was more difficult when it was cloudy.
Also, when I disabled gpsFix and Trackerbooster the GPS did not function at all even if it was sunny.

@beto9000i
im sorry but at 6.13 i dont see any jump in the video!
December 29th, 2011 - 20:13
@beto9000i I am terribly sorry. I do not want to be stubborn but I really do not see the jump in the video. Not at 6:13 anyways. And there I do see the irritating jumps of the GPS system from the Galaxy S. But OK I will not draw any conclusions before I tested it with my own Galaxy S. But in my opinion you should’ve place 2 video’s where you drove the same route twice. Best with split screen. Left without enhancements, right with the enhancements. But I’ll try the fix myself when I go home at 5.
December 29th, 2011 - 20:52
maar voordat de hele gps systeem werkt, moet je dus eerst allerlei afstellingen goed zetten????
December 29th, 2011 - 21:22
@Superhat1000
You guys are stubborn and that’s why there is so much confusion at the forums.
At 6:13 start looking through windshield of the car to the right instead of looking to sgs screen.
You will see that the grass suddenly becomes a side walk!
That’s because I removed some parts of the video to reduce file size, cause it was huge (Full HD)
The car is not jumping to the next street….the video clip is jumping
Going to upload the whole video and you guys will see …..geez

@beto9000i
Sorry to object, but velchandran is right and is not the one who doesn’t pay attention here
At 6:14 (in the video) you clearly see jump to next street (right angle to the street you are actually on). Even the voice commands get confused and there is an extra left turn now. Just a comment, no criticism. Thanks for the video.
I for myself use SGS as GPS navigation and have no complaints, latest JPO firmware (Froyo on board), didn’t observe the issue (at least not yet).
December 29th, 2011 - 22:56
more interestingly, where did you get MOTONAV for your samnsung SGS?
December 29th, 2011 - 23:42
@velchandran
You should pay more attention
I wrote at the beginning of the video that I edit this video removing some parts
to make file smaller; That was the jump you saw
Look at the time on the phone
The gps on my sgs is doing great with or without an external gps receiver…
Firmware is JPH
December 30th, 2011 - 00:26
At 6.14 you see the issue. This is what everyone is complaining about.
Actually the Galaxy S gps output is off the actual position. The software approximates it to a point in the road. It does not work when there are roads close by. Often in Junctions the software places you in wrong roads and gives you wrong directions.
In your case you knew the way. Imagine if you in the middle of the town with multiple junctions and the gps places you in a wrong place. I ended up asking for directions.
